At US Hair Restoration and USHR Spa we are thrilled to announce a new Webinar series which allows for onlookers and patients to connect with Dr. Parsa Mohebi and ask whatever hair loss questions they may have. Every webinar will focus on a series of topics such as “What causes balding” and “Breakthrough technology in Hair Restoration.” Each webinar will feature a time of introduction, an interesting conversation about hair loss, hair restoration, latest techniques of hair restoration, etc. There will also be a time for Q & A which can include unique incentives for those which are interested in a hair loss consultation and hair transplantation.

We are excited about this time for answering many different questions given by individuals who want to know more about the art and science of hair restoration, as well as those who simply want more knowledge about what they can personally gain from a hair transplant. We often receive hair loss and hair restoration questions which get answered over the phone, email, or our blog. In spite of these resources, many feel they don’t have answers for their personal questions. These webinars on hair restoration will give place for the right questions to be answered in an open forum where Dr. Mohebi is available to answer each question himself. This is a great way for starting the New Year off with an more personal way to connect to those who are interested in our services.

New Scientific Study In Hair Restoration

Latisse – How Does It Work?

We, here at USHR Medical Spa, have recently been receiving a lot of inquiries (via email and phone) regarding Latisse and its use. Due to this increase in recent inquiries, we wanted to take a brief moment to review Latisse, its use, side effects, and overall purpose.

Please see below for some of the answers to our commonly asked questions about Latisse.

How often is LATISSE^® recommended to be used after having it prescibed to me?
The solution is recommended for use one time per day (at night) for longer, thicker lashes.

Is LATISSE^® an eyedrop?
No, LATISSE^® is a solution used somewhat like a liquid eyeliner and applied to both top eyelids at night.

Does Brooke Shields really use LATISSE^®?
Yes, Brooke Shields does use LATISSE^®

How long do I have to use LATISSE^® to see the full effects?
Use of LATISSE^® is recommended daily for at least 16 weeks in order to see its full effects. Thereafter the 16 week mark, you should discuss extended use with your LATISSE^® prescriber. Effects are first able to be seen around the 4 week mark.

How much does Latisse cost?
One 30-day solution of LATISSE^® is approximately $120 (varies by clinic). Currently, LATISSE^® is being offered at USHR Medical Spa for $80 ($100 due in office upon purchase & additional $20 mail in rebate offered).

Does LATISSE^® work in replacement of mascara?
No, LATISSE^® is recommended to lengthen, darken, and thicken lashes but is not used as a substitute for make-up. You are however able to use LATISSE^® and mascara together.

Is it true that LATISSE^® can change your eye color?
Increased brown iris pigmentation has occurred when the same formulation of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution was instilled directly into the eye to treat elevated intraocular pressure. Although iris pigmentation was not reported in clinical studies with LATISSE^®, patients should be advised about the potential for increased brown iris pigmentation which is likely permanent.

What happens when I stop using LATISSE^® ?
Upon discontinued use of Latisse, your eyelashes will return to their original appearance before its use. This will occur over the few weeks/months following its discontinuation.

How does LATISSE^® work?
LATISSE^® is believed to affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways: first, it increases the length of this phase; and second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase. The exact way LATISSE^® works is unknown.

Do You or Someone You Know Suffer From Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania (commonly known as “Trich”) is defined as “hair loss from a patient’s repetitive self-pulling of hair.” Trich is characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches. Trichotillomania is classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as an impulse control disorder, but there have been raised questions about how it should be classified. It may at times seem to resemble a habit, addiction, tic disorder or an obsessive–compulsive disorder. This disorder “leads to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment”, and is “often chronic and difficult to treat.”

Trichotillomania may at times be present in infants, but the peak age of onset is between 9 and 13. It may be triggered by depression or stress and due to social implications, the disorder often goes unreported and it is often difficult to predict accurately its prevalence. The lifetime prevalence is estimated to be between 0.6% (overall) and 1.5% (in males) to 3.4% (in females). Among adults, females typically outnumber men 3:1.

Individuals with Trichotillomania exhibit hair of differing lengths; some are broken hairs with blunt ends, some new growth with tapered ends, some broken mid-shaft, or some uneven stubble. Scaling on the scalp is not present, overall hair density is normal, and a hair pull test is negative (the hair does not pull out easily). Hair is often pulled out leaving an unusual shape; individuals with Trichotillomania may be secretive or shameful of the hair pulling behavior.

While most “Trich” patients will notice the improvement or return of all of their hair by ending the habit, some of those who suffer from Trichotillomania have damaged their hair follicles and must be seen by a qualified physician to discuss further options/treatments. Dr. Parsa Mohebi has seen many patients suffering from Trichotillomania and has helped them one-on-one in deciding options for treatments. Although hair transplantation is in no way the answer to “Trich,” having the option available for those who have previously suffered in the past from Trichotillomania is always an honor.
