 Trichotillomania may at times be present in infants, but the peak age of onset is between 9 and 13. It may be triggered by depression or stress and due to social implications, the disorder often goes unreported and it is often difficult to predict accurately its prevalence. The lifetime prevalence is estimated to be between 0.6% (overall) and 1.5% (in males) to 3.4% (in females). Among adults, females typically outnumber men 3:1.

Individuals with Trichotillomania exhibit hair of differing lengths; some are broken hairs with blunt ends, some new growth with tapered ends, some broken mid-shaft, or some uneven stubble. Scaling on the scalp is not present, overall hair density is normal, and a hair pull test is negative (the hair does not pull out easily). Hair is often pulled out leaving an unusual shape; individuals with Trichotillomania may be secretive or shameful of the hair pulling behavior.

While most “Trich” patients will notice the improvement or return of all of their hair by ending the habit, some of those who suffer from Trichotillomania have damaged their hair follicles and must be seen by a qualified physician to discuss further options/treatments. IPL, or otherwise known as a photofacial, is a great tool to treat redness of the skin and slight discoloration. FRAXEL, on the other hand, is designed to treat an array of skin issues. FRAXEL is most effective at skin resurfacing, improving skin texture, pigmentation and shrinking pores, whereas IPL improves only skin color of the skin. Compared to other lasers, FRAXEL treatment is also effective at treating acne scars.

FRAXEL is a much more powerful procedure compared to and IPL treatment. Results from a FRAXEL treatment can be seen in as little as 1-3 treatments (depending on severity). An IPL procedure can take up to 5 or more sessions to see full or near desired results. On the plus side, and IPL still excels in treating discoloration compared to to FRAXEL but for anything more major, FRAXEL may be your best option.

Dysport

Dysport was FDA approved for use in the US to treat wrinkles like the frown and crow’s feet. It’s made of the same neuro toxin Botox is made from but produced in the UK. Dysport has been developed since the 90′s  overseas and is now slowly becoming a mainstream product for wrinkle treatment in Los Angeles.

Is Dysport Better Than Botox?

Dysport and Botox are relatively the same based their initial use. Dysport, however, is designed to have fewer proteins around the enzyme and may be a good option for patients whom have developed a form of immunity to Botox injections. Some have also claimed that Dysport has a quicker on-set response but that is still not clinically confirmed. The last remaining factor is COST. Dysport is a little bit cheaper in price than Botox but nothing to extravagant. This, however, may trigger additional price cuts to Botox but that is yet to be determined as well.
